Human Genetics Unit, Medical Research Council, Edinburgh, UK

The MRC Human Genetics Unit is at the forefront of research into human genetics. Its role is to advance the understanding of genetic factors implicated in human disease and normal and abnormal development. The Unit's programmes of work cover the themes of developmental genetics, chromosome biology and models for human genetic diseases. The unit is one of the largest MRC research establishments supporting approximately 220 scientists, support staff, fellows, PhD students and visiting scientists, of whom approximately 150 are directly funded by the MRC. Information Management Group, School of Computer Science, University of Manchester, UK

The Information Management Group (IMG) conducts research into the design, development and use of data and knowledge management systems. Such research activities are broad in nature as well as scope, including basic research on models and languages that underpins activities on algorithms, technologies and architectures. Challenging applications motivate and validate our research, in particular the Semantic Web and e-Science.

Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris

The Institute of Earth Physics of Paris was created with the objective of understanding the intimate operation of the Earth, from its core to the surface, by using the methods of physics and chemistry and the tools of mathematics and data processing. We work under the leadership of Professor Jean-Pierre Vilotte with his colleagues on the VERCE project, investigating data-intensive and architectural challenges that arise when providing seismologists with distributed e-Infrastructure from HPC centres to seismology archives and data-intensive clusters.

Institute for Adaptive and Neural Computation, Informatics, University of Edinburgh

The Institute for Adaptive and Neural Computation (ANC) is part of the School of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh. The institute fosters the study of adaptive processes in both artificial and biological systems. It encourages interdisciplinary and collaborative work involving the traditional disciplines of neuroscience, cognitive science, computer science, computational science, mathematics and statistics.

Institute of Evolutionary Biology, University of Edinburgh

The Institute of Evolutionary Biology is one of the largest groupings of evolutionary biologists in the world. We study evolution in the broadest possible sense, from virtually every angle and using a great range of organisms and techniques.

Institute of Human Genetics, Newcastle University, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK

The University of Newcastle upon Tyne's 5**-rated Institute of Human Genetics (IHG) is one of four research institutes based within the Faculty of Medical Sciences. It is accommodated together with the NHS Northern Genetics Service within a modern building opened in August 2001 as part of the International Centre for Life. Thanks to a series of major infrastructural investments the IHG is very well equipped for carrying out molecular and cell biology based research.

Institute of Informatics, Slovak Academy of Sciences

The scope of activities of Institute of Informatics includes scientific and research work in informatics, information technology, control theory, robotics and artificial intelligence, organized in departments, and focused into several research directions.

Institute of Scientific Computing, University of Vienna, Austria

The primary objectives of the Institute are

  • to conduct research in programming languages, compilers, programming environments and software tools that support the user in the process of solving problems on high-end computing systems,

KNMI

The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) hosts the seismological archives ORFEUS. We work with the ORFEUS group directed by Dr Torild van Eck and our colleagues Alessandro Spinuso and Luca Trani on the ENVRI and VERCE projects. We previously worked with them and Liverpool Univresity on the RAPIDSeis project.

National e-Science Centre at the University of Glasgow, UK

Our work is focused upon the application of e-Science/e-Research and Grid technologies with particular emphasis upon supporting domains requiring finer grained, user-oriented security. We have a variety of completed and on-going projects in domains such as bioinformatics, clinical trials, epidemiology, electronics, the social sciences amongst numerous others. Our goal is to support research collaborations including those that cross institutional boundaries - this includes inter-disciplinary research collaborations.
