Rapid: Giving Computational Science a Friendly Face

Rapid is a cost-effective and efficient way of designing and delivering portal interfaces to tasks that require remote compute resources. The aim of Rapid is to make completing these tasks as simple as purchasing a book or booking a flight on the web.

The philosophy of Rapid is to deliver customised graphical user interfaces that enable domain specialists to achieve their tasks. These tasks make use of domain-specific applications that run on remote compute resources; a requirement which is satisfied by translating the task into one or several computational jobs to be performed on Grid and Cloud Computing infrastructures, and High-Performance Computing facilities.

Customised interfaces allow tasks to be performed without referring to terminology about the underlying computational infrastructure. Moreover, the system allows to expose particular features of applications as not to overwhelm the user.

Screencast: Rapid Portal for the Open Microscopy Environment

We show a quick prototype where Rapid is integrated with the Open Microscopy Environment developed in Dundee (http://www.openmicroscopy.org/) to allow analysis and visualisation of microscopy images on remote compute resources.

The plugin system is changed, with an 'execute' and a 'retrieve output' phase.
Plugins report errors better.
The <onload> event is added, which is triggered when a new page is loaded.
UI elements <editor>,<checkbox> and <checkboxlist> are added.
Rapid now supports Pluto versions 1 and 2 and a 'minimal' JSR168 version.

RapidSeis: Rapid Portals for Seismological Waveform Data

Final project report for JISC, with links to all individually created deliverables and progress posts. RapidSeis has produced a scientific gateway via a web portal that allows seismologist to pick up data from Orfeus—the central repository for earthquake data in Europe—and then run several analyses on these data. Advanced users can also create new analyses and share these with all the other users.

RapidSeis workflow explained

RapidSeis consists of two porlets that run within the NERIES portal. Both assume the user logged in has already filled his/her cart with seismological data.
